A complex and fragmented control room environment was inhibiting the efficiency and focus of security operations at OLVG’s West location. With Barco control room software, the hospital now has a single, central environment that restores peace, clarity, and control.
OLVG is the city hospital of Greater Amsterdam and plays an important role in healthcare for the region. With locations in East and West, the hospital provides daily care in a dynamic, urban environment. Safety plays a crucial role in this. Not as a separate process, but as an indispensable part of the continuity of care.
Many elements come together in the security control room of OLVG’s West location: camera surveillance, alerts, coordination of security personnel, and an overview of what is happening in and around the hospital at any time. Especially in an environment where peace and control are essential, the control room must be reliable, well-organized, and pleasant to work in.

The control room at the West location increasingly became a bottleneck in daily operations. Security guards operated the systems using eleven mice and eleven keyboards. This meant constantly switching between workstations and systems, resulting in unrest and inefficiency. In addition, the overview was limited. The room was furnished with only 19-inch screens, which meant that information was presented in a fragmented manner.
“You could tell that the space was no longer helping us in our work,” says Dirk van Golstein, Senior Security Officer at OLVG’s West location. "It took too much effort to maintain clarity and keep things calm, although this is so important in a hospital."
OLVG had clear requirements for a new control room. All sources had to be controllable from one central workplace. A clean desk was essential to create calm and clarity.
Barco partner INTER implemented a new control room setup based on Barco's control room software. All sources can now be operated from one central workstation. The multitude of mice and keyboards made way for a clear and logical operation.
Information is clearly presented and readily available. This helps security personnel switch more quickly and respond adequately to situations in and around the hospital. The workplace now supports work, rather than hindering it.
“The difference is huge,” says Dirk. "We have a much better overview and are able to act more quickly. The system is more logically structured and more pleasant to work with. This is an investment that pays off immediately in practice."
From the orientation phase onwards, end users were actively involved in the project. Members of the project team visited the INTER Experience Center to view and experience various solutions. The people who work with the systems in the control room on a daily basis influenced the decision-making from the start.
In addition, INTER organized visits to the Amsterdam UMC and the Erasmus MC, where Barco control room software is already in use within the control room environment. By exchanging experiences with other hospitals, OLVG gained a good understanding of what works in practice and why. These insights formed the basis for the final design.
The collaboration between OLVG and INTER was smooth and professional. The implementation of Barco control room software was carried out in phases and with proper guidance, enabling operators to quickly become familiar with the new way of working. Today, they work daily with confidence in a control room that brings peace and clarity to their operations.
