Barco control room software offers HVC Alkmaar operators a flexible overview of crucial processes

The control room of HVC Waste Energy Plant Alkmaar was upgraded with five new Barco OpSpace workstations. Thanks to Barco control room software, operators now have a flexible overview of all critical processes within the plant, and only need one keyboard and mouse to control different sources.

HVC Alkmaar is a public energy and waste company for 52 municipalities and 8 water boards. The company operates in North Holland, South Holland and Flevoland, and is a leader in sustainable energy projects such as heating networks and geothermal energy. HVC is also the largest public collector of household waste in the Netherlands and is responsible for recycling and energy generation from biomass and residual waste.
New control room
In the HVC control room, the crucial processes of waste processing and energy production are closely monitored and controlled. Operators continuously monitor the operation of installations such as incinerators and turbines, ensure optimal performance and intervene immediately in the event of malfunctions or deviations.
The operators also maintain safe operating conditions and respond quickly to emergency situations. In addition, they optimize the efficiency of the systems, minimize energy consumption and emissions, and coordinate communication between different departments and external parties. This places the control room at the heart of HVC's sustainable and safe business operations.
In 2023, the HVC Alkmaar control room received an upgrade. The previous modernization dated back to 2006, and in the intervening years the technology had become outdated and no longer future-proof. In addition, the old control room offered little room for expansion, meaning it was time for a comprehensive transformation.
Flexible working via a central workstation
In collaboration with the Dutch integrator INTER, Barco installed five new workstations and a new video wall in the new HVC control room. The new workstations are equipped with ergonomic furniture and Barco's OpSpace solution for control rooms.
Barco OpSpace enables operators to flexibly display different sources at their workstation. Where previously they had to physically walk to another location to operate a specific source, they can now do this directly from one workstation, using just one keyboard and mouse. The new workstations contribute to a more ergonomic working method and offer operators a significantly better overview of the entire process.
The renovation also makes the control room future-proof. There is now more space for new installations and workstations, which was not possible before.
