One work environment, a complete overview: Deltion College modernizes control room with Barco CTRL

The Netherlands · 2026

Outdated equipment, scattered controls, and small screens made work in Deltion College’s central control room unnecessarily difficult. Today, with two Barco CTRL workstations, the dispatchers operate all systems from a single, well-organized work environment.

Barco solution

  • Barco CTRL: The KVM over IT solution for your control room

Highlights

  • One central workspace for all security systems
  • Single control per workstation, replacing separate keyboards, mice and a KVM switch
  • Quiet, ergonomic control room: the PCs are located outside the room

Every day, thousands of students come to Deltion College in Zwolle (the Netherlands) to work on their future. With multiple locations and a large flow of students, staff, and visitors, safety is an integral part of daily operations.

The central control room is where all of this comes together. Operators continuously monitor and manage a range of processes, keep track of what happens across the different locations and act immediately when needed. That requires a workstation that gives a clear overview and lets them switch quickly between systems.

The challenge: a control room that had not kept pace

In the years leading up to the project, Deltion College had already upgraded several critical safety systems: the access control system, the fire alarm system, and the intrusion alarm system. The central control room, however, had not kept pace. Its layout was becoming increasingly incompatible with the new systems and with the way the dispatchers wanted to work.

Several PCs under the desks generated a lot of heat and noise. Operators worked with multiple keyboards and mice, an outdated KVM switch and relatively small screens for the camera feeds. Switching between systems took time and attention, while that attention should go to what is happening at the locations.

It was time for a new layout in which technology and workstation work better together. Deltion College set clear requirements for the new control room: ergonomics, ease of use and overview. Operators needed faster access to relevant information and an easy way to switch between systems. The PCs also had to be moved out of the control room to create a quieter working environment.

The solution: two Barco CTRL workspaces

The first step towards the new control room was taken a few years earlier. At the time, Deltion College was looking for a solution for a new crisis room and visited the INTER Experience Center. Staff could see different setups, gain knowledge and experience first-hand how modern control room technology works in practice.

That visit showed what was possible for both the crisis room and the central control room. Deltion College then decided to take a bigger step and renew the entire control room.

Barco partner INTER delivered two new workstations based on Barco CTRL, Barco's control room software. Operators can now view and control all systems and sources from one central workspace. The separate keyboards, mice and screens have made way for clear and logical operation.

Relevant information appears on screen faster. Operators switch easily between the applications and systems they need to monitor security. The technology stays in the background, so they can focus on their core task: monitoring the situation and acting quickly when needed.

The PCs are now located outside the control room. Without heat and noise under the desks, the working environment is quieter and more ergonomic.

The result: a control room that fits today’s operations

With the renewed control room, Deltion College has a working environment that fits the new security systems and the daily work of its operators. The combination of an ergonomic layout, equipment outside the control room and two Barco CTRL workstations brings more calm and a better overview.

This way, Barco CTRL helps Deltion College with what matters most: staying in control of daily operations and contributing to a safe environment for students, staff and visitors.
