Barco’s revolutionary LCD video wall platform wins Red Dot: Best of the Best Award for ground-breaking design

Kortrijk, Belgium, 9 April 2018 – Barco is proud to announce that its Barco UniSee LCD video wall platform has been honored with the prestigious Red Dot: Best of the Best design award. The jury, comprising 40 top designers from all over the world, lauded the platform’s bold and innovative design in support of its overall usability and user-friendliness. The Best of the Best accolade is the highest in the competition, and is the ultimate seal of design quality.

The Red Dot Award: Product Design has roots dating back as far as 1955 and honors the best products created each year. In 2018, designers and manufacturers from 59 countries submitted more than 6,300 objects – which were launched the year before – to the competition. Only 1% of the entries received the highest Best of the Best distinction, making this competition one of the toughest in the field. Following the Red Dot Design award in 2011 for the OverView OL series rear-projection video wall and the Best of the Best award in 2014 for the OBLX free-standing video wall, this is the third time the organization has recognized Barco’s product design expertise.

Outstanding design with ultimate user experience in mind

The Barco UniSee platform, launched in October 2017, revolutionized the LCD video wall experience. Aiming to eliminate the existing flaws in traditional LCD video walls, Barco UniSee features a barely visible inter-screen gap, superb image quality, a longer lifetime and easier installation and maintenance. All while keeping the existing advantages that LCD video walls have as well. To reach this goal, the Barco designers looked at every aspect of LCD video walls, and redesigned them to perfection.

“The motto of our design team is ‘Skip everything that’s irrelevant to the user and his context, and simplify what remains’,” says Tom Dewaele, Design Manager at Barco. “We have followed this credo throughout our ‘design for innovation’ process, starting with a product breakdown in a multidisciplinary setting, and followed by focus workshops to define the overall concept. The result is a unique LCD video wall platform that is easy to use and to handle (taking the bezel-less displays into account), and ensuring optimal panel alignment. Most of all, we managed to offer all this at a competitive price.”

Featuring in a special exhibition

The winners will be celebrated during the award ceremony at the Red Dot Gala on 9 July 2018 at the Aalto Theater in Essen, Germany. Afterwards, all the award-winning innovations will be featured in the special four-week exhibition ‘Design on Stage – Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018’ in Essen. In addition, as of 9 July, they can be found in the Online Exhibition, the Red Dot App, and on the Red Dot 21 website.

About the Red Dot Design Award

In order to appraise the diversity in the field of design in a professional manner, the Red Dot Design Award breaks down into the three disciplines of Red Dot Award: Product Design, Red Dot Award: Communication Design and Red Dot Award: Design Concept. The Red Dot Award is one of the world’s largest design competitions. In 1955, a jury convened for the first time to assess the best designs of the day. In the 1990s, Red Dot CEO Professor Dr. Peter Zec developed the name and brand of the award. Ever since, the sought-after Red Dot award has been the revered international seal of outstanding design quality. Further information available at www.red-dot.de.
