Context

Located on the banks of the Meshvo River, the Shamlaji Temple is one of Gujarat's most ancient and holy Vaishnavite shrines. With a history spanning over 600 years, the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Gadhadhar Shamlaji. The Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board (GPYVB) aimed to enhance the temple's spiritual tourism potential by integrating a permanent sound and light show through 3D projection mapping. The central theme of the show revolves around the Shamlaji Temple itself, with the temple serving as the hero.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the region. The temple's intricate carvings and architectural beauty provided a perfect canvas for the projection mapping, allowing visitors to experience the legends and history of Shamlaji in a visually stunning manner.

This project is a great collaboration between Star Dimensions who executed the integration, Rhino Engineers who designed the concept & managed the entire project and Magical Theatre’s content responsible for the visuals.

Mr. Aman Arora, Founder and Creative Head at Magical Theatre's, highlights: "We have delivered many remarkable projects so far and this one truly stands apart. It’s a perfect fusion of art and technology—like witnessing a magical stage come alive enduring our rich culture and heritage. The architectural grandeur, brought to life through vibrant visuals and compelling storytelling, casts a spell on the audience—immersing them in a magical experience."

Challenge

As always, when working in such sacred environments, it was important to preserve the temple's historical integrity while installing modern AV equipment. The temple's structure and constant foot traffic required careful planning for equipment placement to minimize interference with pilgrims.

Narendra Naidu, Managing Director and Principal Consultant at Rhino Engineers, shares: “Bringing this project to life required a deep understanding of both technical intricacies and cultural sensitivities. It is the first of its kind to feature such a spectacular integration of projection mapping and synchronized RGB dynamic lighting on ancient temple architecture. At Rhino Engineers, we are proud to have played a pivotal role in delivering a solution that not only highlights the temple’s beauty but also honors its sacred significance.”

The site also posed a very potential challenge of monkey menace. They kept tampering with the cabling even while the install work was going on. It was important to protect the cables, projection systems and AC conduits with special protective cabinets.

Solution

The team utilized five Barco UDM series 3-chip DLP laser projectors, each delivering 22,000 lumens, to create stunning visuals on the temple's 90ft x 85ft façade. An air-conditioned control cabin was installed on the rooftop of rampart to house the projectors and AV systems, protecting them from dust, heat, rain and curious primates. Thanks to its robustness, the UDM can withstand the endurances of life on the road.

Notably, the project also included the installation of a 120KW solar power system with 220 panels to support the operations – the first of its kind in the region. The projection mapping show was fully powered by renewable energy, aligning with the broader goals of promoting sustainable tourism and preserving the environment while enhancing the cultural and spiritual experience at the Shamlaji Temple.

Results

The 28-minute show, narrated in Gujarati, Hindi, and English, has captivated audiences with its vivid storytelling and immersive visuals. The integration of Barco's laser projectors has not only enhanced the temple's aesthetic appeal but also promoted its cultural heritage to a broader audience. The project, completed within a year, has been hailed as a significant achievement in blending tradition with technology and sustainability, drawing visitors from across the region and beyond.
