Cleopatra, Egypt’s iconic queen, rules again in immersive kingdom
Spain · 2026
When visitors step through the gates of Matadero Madrid, they are transported to the heart of Hellenistic Egypt to rediscover one of history’s most iconic figures: Cleopatra. CLEOPATRA, THE IMMERSIVE EXHIBITION isn’t just an exhibition, it’s a royal journey through time, where art and technology merge to resurrect the grandeur of Egypt’s last queen. Visitors see Cleopatra’s story; they live it, surrounded by towering Barco-powered visuals, golden sculptures, and a soundtrack that stirs the soul.
Context
CLEOPATRA, THE IMMERSIVE EXHIBITION is the fourth and most ambitious production to date by Madrid Artes Digitales (MAD), blending art, history, and cutting-edge technology to create a multisensory voyage into the Ptolemaic era.
This immersive experience goes far beyond a traditional exhibition. Imagine walking through a digital throne room, where holograms shimmer without glasses, video mapping revives the Lighthouse of Alexandria, and virtual reality plunges you beneath the waves to explore Cleopatra’s lost world.
At the heart of this experience lies the immersive hall: 1,200 m² of floor-to-ceiling projections soaring 8 meters high, complemented by interactive installations and a powerful soundtrack recorded by a 52-piece orchestra, enveloping visitors in a cinematic narrative of power, culture, and destiny.
Challenge
To achieve this level of majesty, every pixel mattered. The team needed visuals that could match the scale of Cleopatra’s legend: sharp, vibrant, and seamless across massive surfaces. The goal was clear: elevate image quality to royal standards.
The previous projection system could not deliver the resolution and image sharpness required for a production of this scale. With content designed in 4K, the team demanded technology capable of rendering intricate details, rich colors, and flawless transitions across expansive walls and floors.
Solution
After a comparative test with multiple projector brands, Barco stood out as the most suitable solution. The installation was expertly carried out by our trusted partner, Fluge Audiovisuales, ensuring flawless integration and performance.
The immersive hall is powered by 13 Barco I600-4K15 projectors, delivering exceptional 4K resolution, smaller pixel size for sharper imagery, and outstanding color depth and precise detail reproduction across massive wall and floor surfaces. The I600s ensure that every scene, from Cleopatra’s coronation to the dramatic fall of Alexandria, is experienced in breathtaking clarity.
To bring the world to life in three dimensions, the spectacular hologram installation features appearances by Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony. The Barco UDM-4K30 projector delivers bright, vivid visuals without the need for glasses or additional devices.
Thanks to Barco’s advanced projection technology, visitors can now enjoy a 25-minute cinematic journey through Cleopatra’s life, enhanced by moving seats, immersive sound, and flawless visuals. Barco provided a robust solution capable of handling one of Europe’s largest immersive installations. The technology ensures consistent performance for daily operations and complex content formats.
Results
With resolutions exceeding 10,000 pixels across the walls and floors, the immersive hall now offers one of the most visually stunning installations in Europe. Barco’s technology crowned the experience, making Cleopatra’s reign unforgettable in the digital age.
Visitors are captivated by the clarity and brilliance of the visuals, while Madrid Artes Digitales celebrates the upgrade as a game-changer for immersive storytelling.
