Context
INTERLUDE was conceived as a story-driven performance, not a conventional light show. It offers 30 minutes of pure immersion, a meditative sound and light experience designed as a pause from the rush of everyday life. Kaspars Zemītis’ soulful guitar melodies intertwine with the three-dimensional harmonies of the State Academic Choir “Latvija”, while Māris Kalve’s stunning art projections transform walls and vaulted ceilings into a living canvas.
The venue itself adds to the magic. Built in 1733, the Reformed Church is a Baroque architectural gem nestled in Riga’s Old Town. Over centuries, it has survived fires, renovations, and Soviet-era transformations, later serving as a legendary recording studio. Today, thanks to INTERLUDE, this historic space opens its doors to a new cultural chapter.
Challenge
The venue itself posed unique challenges: a historic building with intricate surfaces, high ceilings, and strict preservation requirements. Every technical decision had to respect the integrity of the space while enabling a fully immersive audiovisual environment.
The projection system needed to deliver high-resolution visuals that could scale seamlessly across the church’s expansive walls and vaulted ceilings without distortion, turning the church into a living, breathing story space where visuals envelop the audience from every angle.
Equally critical was precise synchronization with the choral and instrumental music, ensuring that every visual cue aligned perfectly with the performance’s rhythm and narrative flow. This level of accuracy was essential to maintain the emotional impact of the show and provide audiences with a cohesive, story-driven experience.
Solution
To achieve this vision, the INTERLUDE team selected eight Barco I600 projectors, strategically positioned to cover the church’s vast interior. These projectors deliver a combined resolution of approximately 80 megapixels, surpassing the clarity of high-end 4K cinema by a factor of eight. This extraordinary level of detail allows visuals to flow seamlessly across walls and ceilings, creating a 360° immersive environment that supports the narrative and amplifies the emotional impact of the music.
Barco’s technology ensured rock-solid reliability, even under the demanding schedule of multiple daily performances. The system integrates effortlessly with the show’s timing, enabling precise control of visual content and guaranteeing that every projection aligns perfectly with the prerecorded music. The installation operates with minimal technical intervention, ensuring smooth workflows and consistent image quality.
