Full speed ahead for immersive seafarer education

Taiwan · 2026

The best way to prepare for life at sea is to experience it before ever leaving port. That's the philosophy behind EVERGREEN MARINE CORP.'s investment in a new upgraded Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator, designed to immerse trainees in realistic navigation scenarios and help them build the skills and confidence required for modern maritime operations.

Barco solutions:

  • 10x FL40-WU MKII

Key benefits:

  • Exceptional visual realism and high frame rates create lifelike training scenarios
  • Reliable 24/7 operation
  • Professional partnership ensuring successful design, deployment and commissioning
  • Long-term peace of mind and responsive local support

A safer voyage starts on shore

As maritime operations become increasingly sophisticated, training environments must keep pace. Evergreen Marine sought to create a simulation platform that meets the stringent requirements of a DNV Class A Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator while supporting STCW'95 competency standards for navigator training.

The new simulator features a fully equipped bridge environment complete with advanced navigational systems, including ARPA radar and ECDIS, supported by a seamless 360-degree visual experience and immersive audio. Together, these elements allow trainees to practice critical ship handling procedures in conditions that closely mirror reality.

The bridge between training and reality

For maritime simulation, visual performance is not simply about creating impressive imagery. Trainees must be able to accurately interpret visual cues, assess distances, monitor surrounding traffic, and respond to rapidly changing conditions. Any compromise in image quality, motion smoothness, or system reliability can reduce training effectiveness and limit immersion.

Training tomorrow’s mariners with a 360° view

To create the visual foundation of its new Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator, Evergreen Marine deployed ten Barco FL40-WU MKII projectors, integrated by Taiwanese simulation specialist Dacoms.

The projection system was designed to support a demanding simulation environment where image quality directly impacts training effectiveness. The FL40-WU MKII projectors deliver the high contrast, smooth motion performance, and color accuracy required to reproduce realistic maritime scenarios across the simulator's 360-degree visual canvas.

High frame rates enable fluid rendering of vessel movements, surrounding traffic, changing weather conditions, and harbor maneuvers, helping trainees maintain situational awareness during exercises. The projectors' stability and consistent image performance ensure uninterrupted training sessions and reliable operation throughout intensive daily use.

Beyond the hardware itself, Barco's expertise in system design, project implementation, and long-term service support helped ensure a seamless deployment. Combined with Barco EssentialCare coverage and local support from Dacoms, Evergreen Marine gained a solution that not only delivers immersive visuals but is also straightforward to maintain and operate over time.

Better training, smoother operation

The new Full Mission Ship Handling Simulator has significantly enhanced the learning experience for trainees. Realistic visuals, fluid motion, and strong image quality help create a more engaging and effective training environment, allowing future navigators to build practical experience in a safe setting before stepping aboard real vessels.

Beyond the improved training outcomes, Evergreen Marine benefits from a system that is straightforward to maintain and supported by prompt, professional service. The result is a future-ready simulation platform that helps ensure maritime professionals are well prepared for the challenges of modern navigation.

We are very satisfied with Barco’s projection solution. The image quality, reliability, and professional support have helped us create a more immersive and effective training environment for our seafarers, giving trainees the confidence to navigate complex real-world scenarios safely.
