A comprehensive way to measure environmental impact

Barco values transparency and therefore we want to communicate openly about the environmental footprint of our products. Today, there is however no all-round scoring scale available that covers different types of products, from medium-sized projectors to large LED walls, servers and medical displays. That is why Barco has developed an objective tool that grades our products according to their ecodesign performance. This gives customers an overview of environmental performance and encourages developers in Barco to make sustainable choices. The framework that has been used to validate the ecoscoring is defined in the ISO 14021 standard.

Products that are at the top of the ranking and thus have a lower environmental footprint can be marked with the ‘Barco Eco Product label’.

Barco ecoscoring system explained

The ecoscoring tool focuses on 4 domains that have the highest impact on the product environmental footprint: Energy, Materials, Packaging & Logistics, and End-of-life.
 

Energy performance

Increase efficiency transforming electrical energy to the product’s intended function; including standby, normal mode, off mode.

Use of chemicals and materials

Reduce the use of (potentially) hazardous substances that are currently or in the future restricted. Improve the use of materials that are more environmentally friendly in terms of production or sourcing.

Packaging and logistics

Optimize packaging design to reduce the amount of material used and logistic footprint; improve the potential to use and recycle the packaging material afterwards.

End-of-life

Improve material efficiency, avoid the product to become early waste, and reduce the impact at end of life; reduce the amount of non-recyclable materials.

For each domain, a score is calculated assessing the product on several relevant topics. The assessment is performed against objective criteria that correlate with regulatory evolutions, industry and peer benchmarks, customer demands or voluntary ecolabels.

The domain topics are scored one by one to reflect the gain in sustainability ranging from no effort, small improvement or significant improvement compared to the most strict (future) regulations or industry benchmarks.

On annual basis, the objective criteria are updated to align with the latest state of the art. This way of working encourages continuous improvement and ensures that newly introduced products that are awarded the Barco Eco Product label represent best in class sustainable products.

Barco’s ecoscoring system is fully integrated into the product design process. At the start of the design phase, sustainable considerations need to be made to reach a high ecoscore. Throughout the complete development process R&D is challenged to incorporate ecodesign in its decision-making and to continuously improve sustainability of Barco products.

Barco Eco Product label

The ‘Barco Eco Product label’ is reserved for products that excel on at least two domains, provided that the performance of the other two domains are at least as good as the industry benchmark.

If a product only complies with the current eco design regulations for one single domain, the product must excel on the 3 other domains to obtain the Barco Eco Product label. In any case Barco Eco Products are best in class regarding energy efficiency.

The score represents the product performance at product launch or after a major product change.

ISO 14021 framework 

EY, who is experienced with performing audits within similar industries / companies, has provided a Limited Assurance opinion on the ecoscoring methodology of Barco. The framework that has been used to validate the ecoscoring methodology is defined in the ISO 14021 standard.

Products that are assigned the highest ecoscore, also bring value for our customers on several aspects. These products typically have a lower TCO because they are best-in-class when it comes to energy efficiency and longevity. Furthermore, they are designed to ensure modularity, upgradability and connectivity, and re-use and recyclability.
