From racetrack to skyline: F1 energy lights up Shanghai

China · 2026

In mid-March, the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix 2026 lit up Shanghai. As part of the city’s “Spring Debut Season” – a flagship Culture-Commerce-Tourism-Sports-Exhibition initiative – the Checkered Flag Carnival ran alongside the race, turning the event into a full city-wide experience. While the daytime program delivered interactive showcases and fan engagement, the real transformation happened after dark. Along the West Bund in Shanghai’s Xuhui District, Barco high-brightness projection brought iconic architecture to life. Landmark buildings became dynamic storytelling canvases, extending the speed, energy, and emotion of motorsport into Shanghai’s nighttime skyline.

Barco solutions:

  • 14× QDX-4K45 projectors

  • 6× UDX-4K40 projectors

  • 3× UDX-W40 projectors

Key benefits:

  • A range of light sources, resolutions, and brightness levels enables flexible deployment across diverse scenarios.

  • Powered by the Barco Pulse platform for seamless control, from on-site operation to remote monitoring.

  • Modular architecture supports easy maintenance and readiness for future upgrades, including 8K.

  • Long-lasting brightness and a compact, lightweight design simplify transport, setup, and operation.

Turning the West Bund into a living F1 stage

To deliver a true day-to-night experience, the project aimed to create a striking nighttime landmark that blends racing culture with the urban environment. The distinctive architecture of the West Bund – including the West Bund Grand Theatre, Tank Shanghai, and the Small Cement Silos – served as the foundation for large-scale projection mapping, turning the area into a unified visual experience.

Performance that meets the moment

Tight timelines and complex outdoor conditions demanded both speed and precision. Barco projectors enabled fast deployment and accurate mapping and calibration. Even against ambient city lighting, visuals remained sharp, bright, and vibrant. The system also proved its reliability in Shanghai’s fluctuating spring temperatures and humidity, maintaining stable performance throughout the event.

A total of 23 high-brightness Barco QDX and UDX projectors transformed the West Bund into an immersive visual landscape. Industrial heritage sites and contemporary architecture were reimagined with racing-inspired motion graphics, brand storytelling, and artistic content.

Three landmarks, three unique experiences

  • West Bund Grand Theatre

Fourteen Barco QDX-4K45 projectors, equipped with telephoto and wide-angle lenses, mapped precisely across two facades. The building’s wave-textured exterior became a fluid canvas, blending motorsport visuals with architectural form. Official race content and sponsor branding integrated seamlessly, balancing artistic impact with brand visibility.

  • Tank Shanghai

Six Barco UDX-4K40 projectors transformed massive oil tanks into immersive racing arenas. High-speed action, crowd energy, and vivid color reproduction placed audiences at the heart of the experience.

  • Small Cement Silos

Three Barco UDX-W40 projectors turned cylindrical silos into striking oversized “cans”, featuring bold greens, rich reds, and crisp white logos. The installation quickly became a visual focal point, driving engagement through bold simplicity.

A city-scale celebration of speed and light

Barco’s projection technology redefined the West Bund, turning architectural landmarks into high-impact storytelling platforms. The result was a powerful blend of art, urban identity, and commercial communication. With vibrant imagery and lifelike detail, the installations invited both residents and visitors to experience the thrill of Formula 1 in a new way – through a seamless fusion of light, motion, and sound.

Beyond the event itself, the project highlights Shanghai’s growing momentum in the “light and shadow economy”, setting a benchmark for how cities can use immersive visual experiences to animate public space.
