Game on at the Hockey India League with Barco projection

The inaugural event for the Hero Hockey India League 2024-25 in Rourkela, Odisha, India wasn't just a celebration of world-class hockey—it also delivered a spectacular showcase of Barco projection mapping technology, solidifying the tournament as one of the most exciting and innovative dates on India's sports and entertainment calendar.

Context

The Hockey India League is a professional field hockey league organized by the governing body for sports in India. The 2024-2025 season takes place in the city of Rourkela where Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium, billed as the world’s largest fully seated hockey arena by the Guinness World Records, would host 40 of the total 44 matches among eight teams (Men) including the inaugural match.

For this year’s opening ceremony, the hockey league governing committee wanted it to be something unlike anything done before. A true festival of hockey with a star-studded lineup headlining the event with their performances, blending entertainment and innovation in a way that excites fans and brings sports closer to them.

From the moment the opening ceremony began, audiences were captivated by a cutting-edge large-scale floor projection mapping. The entire hockey ground was transformed into a dynamic canvas, immersing viewers in vibrant visuals with 3D illusions that brought the game, culture, and emotion to life in stunning detail.

Challenge

Creating such a mesmerizing experience came with its own set of challenges. The project required precise alignment, crisp visuals, and seamless transitions to ensure that every moment of the ceremony was perfectly executed. The technical team had to work within tight deadlines and ensure that the equipment could handle the demands of a large-scale outdoor event.

Solution

The AV technical solution for this ambitious project was entrusted to Spectrum AV, a company renowned for delivering high-impact, large-scale event technology across India. The technical team worked tirelessly to execute the vision to perfection. They utilized twelve Barco UDX-4K40 and twenty-four G100-W22 projectors to bring the vision to life.

Our projectors enabled a stunning show for the audience with impactful images taking over the sports ground. Their laser projection technology delivers sharp image quality, high brightness and exceptional color accuracy.

In addition, the compact yet powerful formats facilitate versatility and simplify the multi-angle installations. The UDXs and G100 also offer advanced warping and blending capabilities through Barco Pulse, making these projectors a perfect fit for the multi-channel mapping ensuring a seamless and uniform display.

The result was a breathtaking display of projection mapping that not only set a new benchmark for future Hockey India League events but also showcased how technology and creativity can elevate live sports experiences to unforgettable new heights.
