The rise of Direct View LED
Direct View LED introduced a fundamentally different approach to cinema presentation. Unlike projection systems, LED displays emit light directly from millions of individual pixels on the screen surface itself.

As of December 02, 2023, CTP 1.4 will be in effect. CTP 1.4 contains image testing designed specifically for Direct View screen systems which previous compliance test plans lacked. Existing Direct View devices listed on the DCImovies.com Compliant Equipment page were tested prior to the development of CTP 1.4. It should be noted that they have been tested under the legacy Projector-based CTP which did not contemplate the specifics of Direct View technology. As such, these devices are largely untested with respect to image performance. Manufacturers of such Direct View displays are encouraged to retest under CTP 1.4 (or later) to ensure their performance meets the requirements of the latest DCI Direct View Addendum. DCI encourages consultation with additional industry experts to ensure a thorough understanding of the issues and limits with direct-view systems, including but not limited to sound reproduction.

The introduction of Direct View-specific testing
In July 2023, DCI approved CTP 1.4, introducing dedicated Direct View Display test sequences and Direct View-specific image-performance testing into the Compliance Test Plan.
For the first time, DCI established dedicated Direct View certification pathways for:

- HDR Direct View

2. SDR Direct View
Introduced with CTP 1.4, SDR Direct View became the first DCI certification category specifically developed for Direct View displays.
While SDR Direct View maintains the traditional DCI SDR presentation target of 48 nits peak white, it introduces Direct View-specific evaluation methods for characteristics that are unique to emissive display technology.
The goal is not to increase brightness beyond traditional SDR cinema, but to ensure that Direct View displays are evaluated according to the unique characteristics of LED display architecture.

3. HDR Direct View
