Barco illuminates Xi’an’s Tree of Life

Standing as a new landmark at MixC Xi’an, the “Tree of Life”, is inspired by the ginkgo tree in the Ancient Guanyin Temple of Xi’an. Its design captures the natural beauty of Asia and Europe, showcasing seven distinct landforms and ecosystems, from woodland to moss-covered plateaus, to symbolize the beauty of nature and the power of resilience. This project, executed by Barco’s partner Landsky Technology Co., Ltd., integrates the historical charm of Xi’an’s ancient Silk Road with modern innovation, showcasing a feast of light and shadow that enriches the city’s cultural landscape.
Context
Designed by renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick, the “Tree of Life” stands as a breathtaking structure when viewed from below. From the vibrant hues of Tang tri-color glazed ceramics to the elegance of Lantian jade, the light show on the structure tells the story of the Silk Road through dynamic visuals. Using the narrative arc of seasonal changes, the performance weaves themes of Culture, Nature, and Future. Viewed through the lens of Eastern aesthetics, it presents a spectacular journey across time and space, offering the citizens of Xi’an a breathtaking feast of light and shadow artistry.
Challenge
The projection surface’s intricate structure required precise installation with adjustable angles at both left and right sides, vertically and horizontally. The outdoor conditions, particularly high humidity, posed additional challenges to the projectors’ performance, operation, and longevity.
Solution
A total of twenty-four UDX projectors and four G100 projectors were strategically installed on the podium roof, the first-floor circular green belt, and the Floor B1, illuminating the “Tree of Life”.
With exquisite, detailed images featuring a maximum 4K UHD resolution, up to 32,000 lumens output, and a wide color gamut exceeding Rec. 709 standards, the Barco’s UDX projectors delivered exceptional performances.
With various lens options, accessories, and a compact, lightweight design, the projectors offer strong and reliable multi-channel performances for the blooming of the “Tree of Life”. The project team used simulation software to confirm accurate positioning and lens configurations, ensuring the projections seamlessly integrated with the building. custom-designed mounts were used, allowing for full 360-degree rotation to enable fine adjustments after installation, providing a fully customized and complete projection solution for the project.
Furthermore, the UDX series’ excellent sealing design enabled them to operate efficiently at humidity levels exceeding 85%, minimizing the impact of weather conditions and ensuring high reliability and longevity in demanding conditions.
Results
The “Tree of Life” stands tall in Xi’an with a fresh new look, becoming a cultural symbol and a future icon for this ancient city. The rich history, folk customs, and modern vitality of Xi’an are seamlessly intertwined, showcasing a stunning blend of ancient and contemporary elements through a revitalized artistic expression. This masterpiece presents a unique fusion of tradition and modernity, imbuing the ancient capital with a distinctive, timeless radiance.
