Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul, South Korea, is not just an exquisite expression of modern architecture. The building is also capable of transcending its form to become a digital canvas for art and expression, which it did this year for the Seoul Light DDP 2025 Autumn festival.

Since the inception of the Seoul Light DDP festival in 2019, Barco has been intimately involved with the event due to its partnership with the Seoul Design Foundation. Jasline Tay, regional sales head APAC, Barco, details the relationship: “Barco is proud to have been involved as a partner for the Seoul Light DDP since its inception. Together with our partners, our projectors have brought this event to life, and we continue to do so as our technologies advance.”

The history of collaboration between Seoul Light DDP and Barco began with models like the Barco UDX-W32 being pressed into action in the past years. Barco projection was critical in establishing the event’s initial pedigree. However, as audiences return year after year, the need for continuous visual innovation was evident to all.

The latest iteration, Seoul Light DDP 2025 Autumn, featured the works of international artists such as Laurent Grasso and Aka Chang, alongside local creative powerhouse d’strict and works generated with OpenAI technology. The artwork and the evolving tastes of audiences meant that a new level of performance was required. Additionally, the canvas itself added to the complexity of the task of rendering visuals for Seoul Light DDP 2025 Autumn.

Designed by the late Zaha Hadid, DDP is famously the world’s largest amorphous architectural body and presents a technical challenge for any large-scale media installation.

Tay elaborates: “The building surface is not the easiest canvas to work with. It has a shiny, metallic finish to it, and this makes it difficult to project on. And if we consider the tastes and preferences of today’s audiences, you can safely say that brighter is better.”

For the Seoul Light DDP 2025 Autumn festival, the technical imperative was not just to light the surface, but to deliver a quantum leap in visual intensity that could adequately portray the artistic visions under the theme, ‘Everflow: Moving Field’. To deliver this ‘quantum leap’, Seoul Light DDP 2025 Autumn turned to the Barco QDX-4K45 projectors.

Tay explains the seismic shift brought about by the selection: “With our UDX range of projectors and other models, we were able to deliver 30,000 lumens of brightness, which was very effective. These were used for the Seoul Light DDP events in the past. But as I mentioned earlier, the tastes of the audiences are evolving and projection has to evolve with them. With the QDX projectors, we can deliver a 50% increase in brightness, reaching the 45,000 lumens brightness mark. And this increase in brightness makes a whole lot of difference.”

The result is a spectacular set of images that wowed visitors at the Seoul Light DDP 2025 Autumn festival. A total of 26 Barco QDX projectors were used to create an eye-catching and impressive projection mapping spectacle on the 222m-long façade of DDP. The event raised the bar for the atmosphere that can be created with astute projection mapping and impactful art.

The Barco QDX projectors played a crucial part in the success of the event. Not just offering increased brightness, the QDX projectors come equipped with Barco’s 0.96 DMD chip. They produce stunning 4K picture quality with rich, lavish colours. Performance is further enhanced by Barco’s patented Pulse electronics, allowing users to enjoy ultra-fast processing and high bandwidth support up to 8K 60Hz or 4K 240Hz for smoother images and sharper pixels.

Performance, however, is not the only requirement for an event of Seoul Light DDP’s stature and importance. The success of a public exhibition of this scale is intrinsically tied to the reliability of the chosen technology as well.

Barco’s QDX series of projectors is built for longevity. From the conception and design of the product, Barco wanted to ensure that the projectors would maintain their stunning brightness and image quality when put to the test in the field. The modular design of the QDX series projector allows for easy maintenance, and its advanced air filter system ensures reliable performance even in the harshest environments.

With the Barco QDX projectors selected for the projection mapping, the event was executed with precision. Tay details: “Our rental partners have been working with Barco projectors and the Seoul Light DDP festival for many years. They are extremely proficient when it comes to projection mapping, and the fact that they have worked with the DDP façade as a canvas before meant that they were familiar with the intricate challenges and nuances of the event. The QDX projectors offered them greater capabilities this year, and we feel that they have done the most spectacular job yet.”

The power of the QDX projectors and the intricate sophistication of the system deployed by Basictech and M2visual for Seoul Light DDP 2025 Autumn festival was evident for all to see. The seamless, mapped effect created across the complex three-dimensional surface required rigorous calibration and high-performance output, which the QDX projectors delivered in style.

The partnership between Seoul Light DDP and Barco is set to continue through to the end of the year, with the QDX-4K45 projectors also powering the DDP’s winter event, assuring consistent quality and spectacle for visitors through the season.

The QDX projectors offered them greater capabilities this year, and we feel that they have done the most spectacular job yet.
