When you look at an LED video wall, what you see is the result of countless engineering decisions working in perfect harmony. Behind every crystal-clear image, every smooth motion, and every accurate color lies a foundation of innovation that Barco has been building for over 25 years. Today, that foundation includes more than 85 patents specifically designed for LED image processing – with 65 of them integrated directly into Infinipix-powered LED walls.
Since the first Infinipix deployment in 2014, Barco has consistently pushed the boundaries of what's possible in LED image processing. But our journey in this field started much earlier. Our patent portfolio represents contributions from more than 25 inventors across three critical areas: motion performance, display calibration, and video format conversions. This isn't about filing patents for the sake of numbers – it's about solving real problems that our customers face every day in control rooms, broadcast studios, design centers, and countless other demanding environments.
What sets Barco apart is our integrated approach. While many companies focus on individual components, we've developed a complete ecosystem where processing, calibration, and display work together seamlessly. This holistic thinking has led to innovations that simply aren't possible when you're working with off-the-shelf solutions cobbled together from different vendors. And the good thing is that all complexity is completely hidden from the users! Infinipix is renowned for its incredible ease of use, helping to deploy LED walls better and faster.
Three pillars of innovation
Our patent portfolio clusters around three main themes, each addressing fundamental challenges in LED video wall technology.
Motion performance is where milliseconds matter. Through patented technologies including single-step processing, frame-locked low-latency processing, and motion smearing reduction, Infinipix achieves near-zero latency – less than one frame of delay. The result? Smooth, tear-free visuals even with fast-moving content, and response times so quick that Formula 1 teams trust them for driver training simulators.
LED wall calibration ensures that what you see is exactly what was intended. Our highly unique patented sub-pixel color processing dramatically reduces crosstalk artifacts between colors while optimizing accuracy. Advanced dithering techniques replicate the human visual system to eliminate the constraints of LED PWM precision, making details visible that would otherwise be lost. This is technology that is highly needed to correctly display HDR content – and because we trust our eyes, there is no better technology to follow than one that is based on human vision. Uniformity compensation guarantees equal visibility of details anywhere on the screen.
Video format conversions make sure every source looks at its best on your display. Patented tone mapping ensures every color detail of every video source is perfectly visible, regardless of the LED wall's brightness or the source's intended luminance. Single-step video source resolution conversion maximizes sharpness by combining multiple processing steps into one optimized operation. HDR processing and perceptual color space conversion work together to display even out-of-gamut colors without losing detail or texture.
Beyond patents: innovation without borders
Did we patent all innovations in our Infinipix LED processor? No, we didn't – that would be too time-consuming and expensive. Some of our most essential features never made it to the patent office, but that doesn't make them any less remarkable. Take our high bandwidth mode, for example. This feature allows the system to run at both 1Gb and 5Gb bandwidth capacity per connection – five times larger than typical LED processing solutions. The advantage? Dramatically fewer cable runs from processor to display, which means less complexity, fewer potential failure points, and easier installation. It's a perfect example of how Barco's engineering excellence extends far beyond what's documented in patent filings.
The innovation continues
These 85+ patents are the reason why Infinipix delivers the reliability, image quality, and ease of use that professionals depend on. Over the coming weeks, we'll dive deeper into each of these patent clusters, exploring how specific innovations solve real-world challenges and deliver tangible benefits for users.
From the surgeon who needs to see details invisible elsewhere, to the control room operator monitoring critical infrastructure, to the designer reviewing 3D prototypes – Barco's patented technologies ensure that LED video walls enhance decision-making and improve outcomes.
